Kerala rains: Videos show nature's wrath, PM mourns loss of lives (WATCH VIDEO)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has mourned the loss of lives due to heavy rain in Kerala.

Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, Prime Minister Modi said he spoke to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and took stock of the situation in the state. 

Stating that he was saddened by the loss of lives due to heavy rains and landslides, the Prime Minister assured that the authorities are working on the ground to assist the injured and affected.

The death toll in the heavy rains, which have thrown life out of gear in Kerala, has risen to 23. Eleven people were killed in a landslide in Kottayam on Saturday. Rescue operations are continuing in the Idukki district's Kokkayar where a landslide occurred. The bodies of six people were found here. Three were swept away in Kottayam and one in Idukki. A two-year-old boy died in a ravine in Kozhikode district's Vadakara. 

Palakkad and Thrissur continue to receive rains. The water level in the rivers is also rising. The weather forecast is that it will rain heavily again from Wednesday.

Earlier today, the bodies of 11 people who went missing in a landslide at Kottayam district's Mundakayam have been found. The bodies of six members of a family were found in Kavali while four bodies were recovered in the Plappally locality of the district. The body of a missing person was found in the mountain water patch at Idukki's Nirmalagiri. The body of the victim -- identified as Jojo -- was found in Vadassery. Jojo was hit by a mountain of water while clearing dirt and mud near his home.

The Kerala State Electricity Board has pegged the losses to its infrastructure at around Rs 12.5 crore. 

Meanwhile, heavy rains inundated low-lying and coastal areas of Kodungallur in the Thrissur district. Despite the flood threat, no relief camps have been set up in Kodungallur taluk at present. All preparations have been made to set up camp at the Edathiruthi Kalikutty Cultural Center where the flood threat is most prevalent.

The Central Meteorological Department has forecast thundershowers and winds of up to 40 kmph in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Ernakulam and Thrissur districts of Kerala in the next few hours.
