Telangana high court lawyers divided in celebration and protest of Citizenship Amendment Act
The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) seeks to grant Indian citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists and Christians fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
Hyderabad: Several lawyers from Telangana high court on Wednesday (December 18) were divided into two groups which celebrated the Centre's decision and staged a protest over the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 (CAA).
A group of lawyers were seen distributing sweets among themselves and hailing the PM Narendra Modi government for implementing the CAA, while the other group were seen raising slogans against the Centre.
The Citizenship Amendment Act seeks to grant citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists and Christians who fled religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh and came to India on or before December 31, 2014.
