In a recent assessment report on China’s military and security developments, the US Department of Defense has said the standoff between Indian and Chinese troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) since the Galwan Valley clash in May 2022 has given the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) ‘valuable real-world operational and tactical experience’.

Highlighting the key developments of the Chinese military, the report claims that Beijing is taking ‘incremental and tactical actions’ to press its authority along the LAC. According to the report, the ‘acute tensions and clashes’ that followed along the Indo-China border also led to the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) force buildup and establishment of forward positions along the LAC.

The report also notes that since the start of early May 2020, troops from either side have indulged in ‘multiple unarmed clashes’ along the LAC. It also mentions that a 100-home village was built by China between the Tibet Autonomous Region and Arunachal Pradesh in the eastern sector sometime last year, clearly indication Beijing’s intention to press its claim at the LAC despite the ongoing diplomatic and military dialogues.
