A pro-Kannada organisation which tried to exhort money from a lodge had the tables turned on them, revealing the scam.

The accused allegedly sent call girls to the lodge and then visited the lodges with some goons. He used the threat of a raid to frighten owners, claiming he would expose them to the police and shut down the lodge.

Sridhar, owner of the Abhamini Comforts Lodging and Boarding. in Jayanagar Police limits says that he had taken over the place from other owner for lease and was to officially open from March 1.

"I was away from the hotel when these incidents took place. I received a call from a person by name Sunil who claimed to be the member of the Yuva Karnataka Kannada Vedike. I was told that my lodge was raided and said that there was a prostitution racket in the lodge.  I was asked to pay Rs two lakh,"

However, that time, things did not go as planned. Even as a few members of this organisation barged into the hotel, claiming it was a raid to check illegal activity, hotel workers smashed Sunil's face and called police on the spot.

"Fake organisations are putting Kannada reputation on stake. The Jayanagar police had warned the organisation not to conduct any raid as they are not the authority even in genuine cases and asked them to keep away from our lodge," said Sridhar.

Sunil, however, denied all allegations. He claimed he had information about 'illegal activity' in the lodge and wanted to 'save' youths from getting 'spoiled'.  "The lodge authorities have assaulted me when I came to get the evidence. I will protest and expose such lodges," he said.

The Jayanagar police which registered a case of Non-Cognizable Report in this connection says, the Kannada organisation is not above the law.  "If the lodge authorities file a complaint against Sunil saying he demanded Rs two lakhs, we will register a case of extortion against him," said a senior officer from Jayanagar police station.

Another officer says, that there are many such organisations and fake RTI activists and even journalists who extort money by blackmailing public and traders.
