AMMA female artists not to travel alone

Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) has proposed a 'unique solution' to stop crimes against women. The move was in the wake of recent abduction and assault on a prominent Malayalam actress.

The solution, which they claim as a well-meaning move, recommends women artists not to travel alone even during day time. Deeply steeped in patriarchy, the advisory just makes it clear that the industry, which has never been progressive in its approach, remains the same.

Malayalam cinema has always instigated misogyny and Prithviraj openly apologised for mouthing misogynistic dialogues in his movies. The actor also promised that he would never again make a statement in his film disrespecting women.

However, the cinema industry does not seems to have this opinion.

There are reports that a section of members are unhappy about the proposal and feels that an organisation meant for the welfare of its members should not have come up with such a statement. A senior actor who visited the mother of actress asked her why her daughter didn't try to jump off the car and escape.

Though some members responded to the advisory, the industry has been largely silent on the matter. Taking a jibe at the proposal, Aashiq Abu posted on his Facebook page that he cannot appreciate AMMA for coming up with such a 'liberal' and 'historic' opinion.

Sajitha Madathil, who is not a member of the Association, questioned whether AMMA intends to pin the responsibility of actresses on themselves. She also said that the organisation has equal responsibility towards both men and women as both are members of AMMA. "It cannot escape from the responsibility of female members. The organisation is not only for men in the industry," she said.

However, Idavela Babu, general secretary of AMMA refused to comment on the proposal and said anything discussed in the meetings of the organisation is purely meant for its members, The News Minute reports.
