Kerala police have decided to deploy first all-women battalion in the force to take care of the security matters of the capital city on the day of Attukal Pongala. Women commandos will be deployed around the Attukal Devi Temple, which is being branded as the Sabarimala of women.

A platoon of 30 women officers will guard the temple surroundings on the final two days of the festival, including the day of Pongala.

The idea was mooted by State Police Chief Loknath Behra, who chose the largest congregation of women in the state as the best opportunity to launch the all-women battalion for the first time. "We deploy our most efficient personnel and all available measures to ensure security at Sabarimala. This time we decided to extend the same for Pongala as well," City Police Commissioner G Sparjan Kumar said.

Range IG, Manoj Abraham will lead the security arrangements in connection with the festival. "The sole duty of women commandos will be to act in case of any sabotage attempts or extreme violence."

Police are also planning to deploy Pink Volunteers, an all-women squad consisting of 200 special officers. The officers will be wearing pink jackets and will assist cops to provide all sort of support to devotees on the day.

Special officers include women traffic wardens and officials who have taken voluntary retirement from Central forces like CRPF.

The police have also launched a helpline number for the devotees for the day - 7559099100.
