Women's Day: Fighting poverty, these ladies have set the wheels in motion for a better life

As empowering women does not limit only to tailoring and other small skills, 70 women have turned gutsy to battle all odds and get trained in driving the car. Few are now driving cabs, steering people through the streets of Bengaluru. We salute these women, who have fought the odds to pave the way forward and overturn the wheels of fortune.

Bengaluru: To drive a cab through Bengaluru streets is challenging and women taking up such a role definitely raise eyebrows. But for Action Aid, an NGO that believed in breaking gender stereotypes, it was a two-year effort to empower 70 women to take up mainstream driving.

The women are selected from slums and other places. Those, who are from downtrodden communities, are counselled.
Once the NGO wins their confidence, the women are trained for one month and later placed as cab drivers.

To make them feel secure and boost their confidence, these women are trained in self-defence too. On Women's Day, this story of ActionAid empowering women is dedicated to all those ladies, who do not want to be just a cog in the wheel.
