Three capitals in Andhra Pradesh: Farmers, residents stage protests, one of them attempts suicide

While thousands of people hit the streets to express their disapproval to three capitals in the state, a farmer tried to commit suicide by setting himself on fire.

Amaravati: A farmer tried to commit suicide at Penumaka village on Thursday (December 26) during the protests against Andhra Pradesh government's proposal to form three capitals in the state.

Police intervened at the nick of time and rescued the farmer, Ramesh Kumar. He attempted self-immolation by pouring petrol on himself, confirmed Tadepalli police officials. Ramesh said that he was upset over the government's proposed decision to shift the state capital from Amaravati.

Earlier, the farmers appealed to the BJP state president Kanna Lakshmi Narayana to take the matter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah. Narayana assured the farmers that BJP would stand by them.
