Penalties, doubling of taxes for high-rise buildings in Bengaluru: BBMP sends message to owners, residents

The BBMP mayor and commissioner in unison say that high-rise buildings which have come up under its limits will not be demolished for violating rules. Rather, such buildings will be made to pay heavy penalties and high taxes

As courts seem to be more involved in checking on high-rise buildings and structures that violate the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act in terms of built-up area, additional floors etc, the BBMP now aims to tackle them with the heavy penalties and doubling of taxes.

Earlier, there was a proposal to demolish such buildings. After the Kerala government demolished four high-rise buildings near the coastal belt in Kochi, there was mounting pressure on the BBMP to take a similar stance. However, the residents in such illegal structures can breathe a sigh of relief as BBMP commissioner BH Anil Kumar has hinted at letting violators off after they pay a hefty penalty.

The BBMP commissioner said that the BBMP may levy heavy penalties and impose high taxes on such buildings that have violated BBMP rules.
