Citizenship Act: Protests turn violent in Delhi’s Seelampur, cops resort to lathi-charge

Protest against the Citizenship Act turned violent after protesters pelted stones at buses and the police in Delhi. The cops lathi-charged protesters who outgrew them in number and allegedly set ablaze a police barricade.  

New Delhi: Even before the Delhi Jamia controversy diminishes, yet another clash erupted during a protest against the Citizenship Act at Seelampur in New Delhi this afternoon. Protests against the Citizenship Act turned violent as police lathi-charged crowds and fired tear gas shells as the protesters allegedly set ablaze a police blockade and pelted stones at buses. At least two policemen were injured and a news agency quoted a witness saying that a "peaceful protest this morning against the Citizenship law turned violent".

Buses and cars were damaged and roads were strewn with barricades and stones once the clash set in. According to a senior police officer, the protest began around 12 pm. People from the area gathered at a prominent crossing and took out a march. Protest turned violent when the protesters allegedly targeted buses. The police moved in to check the violence but were outnumbered as the protesters threw stones at them.
