Cholera: Bengaluru’s BBMP clears streets of vendors and hawkers

Following the orders from the BBMP commissioner, BBMP engineers and health staff have begun conducting rounds in the evening and late nights to clear hawkers and food stalls in an attempt to contain the spread of waterborne infections.

To contain the spread of cholera and gastroenteritis which have been reported from HSR in Bommanahalli, Varthur and Whitefield surroundings, the BBMP commissioner has instructed officials to clear the streets of foods stalls and juice shops.

However, this decision has been criticised by a few activists saying the shutting of shops and food joints on the street is not justified as it impacts their livelihood.

The activists claim that the waterborne infections have risen due to mixing of sewage from BWSSB pipes due to ongoing drinking water connection work in these areas.
