BBMP's Kannada push: English signboards removed from Bengaluru, trade licence to be cancelled

To send a strong message to traders, shopkeepers and big business establishments, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials removed English signboards and advertisements in such places. The officials say that in February, when all such shop owners come for trade license renewal, BBMP will not renew. All this to ensure Kannada isn't sidelined.

Bengaluru: Think twice before flouting the rules of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).  If there aren't Kannada signboards, BBMP will not only remove them, but will also cancel the renewal of trade licence.

Based on the direction on BBMP commissioner BH Anil Kumar, Bhagyalakshmi, health officer, Jayanagar, said that BBMP had issued the notice on November 2 and served the second notice on December 1 stating that by December 15, traders, shopkeepers and other business establishments need to pay heed to Kannada.

Post which, the drive was launched in 45 shops where they removed all the English signboards.

According to Bhagyalakshmi, when those shop owners and traders come for renewal, the BBMP will cancel the renewal.
