Tamil Nadu O Paneerselvam demands for fresh trust vote in Tamil Nadu Assembly

A petition has been filed by the former chief minister O Paneerselvam seeking the cancellation of trust vote held on February 18, 2017. In the petition, he has also requested for a fresh trust vote in the state assembly through a secret ballot. It is reported that the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the plea on July 11.

After the demise of J Jayalalitha, O Panneerselvam resigned as chief minister due to problems within the party.

Later, on behalf of Sasikala’s team, E Palaniswami was appointed as the chief minister. Due to this, the AIADMK split into two groups.

In order to confirm E Palaniswami’s role as the chief minister, the government was ordered to conduct a trust vote in the assembly on February 18.

A complaint was lodged by Madurai MLA S Saravanan who alleged that the legislators were being held against their will in the Koovathur resort.

Later, when the trust vote took place in the assembly both Paneerselvam and the opposition party, DMK, insisted that the voting should be held secretly. E Palaniswami was elected through a voice vote.

Opposing this, a petition was filed by former minister Pandiarajan from Paneerselvam’s team. In the Supreme Court, he requested for a fresh trust vote saying that 122 MLAs of the ruling AIADMK were kept at a resort forcibly and was taken directly to the assembly to cast their vote.

Following this, a Supreme Court bench led by Dipak Mishra has agreed to hear the plea on July 11.
