The Delhi Public School (North) in the City has cancelled its plans to celebrate Chinese New Year following strong opposition and protest, reported Kannada Prabha.

The school owned by Mansur Ali Khan, son of MP A Rehman Khan had organised a competition to celebrate Chinese New Year celebrations on Aug 11, as part of the Council of British International Schools (COBIS) competition. The school administration had issued a circular in this regard and instructed parents to prepare their children for Chinese New Year celebration. The parents objected to this and somehow ABVP got to know of the plan and gheraoed the school demanding to abandon the plan.

Local Block Education Officer Narayan visited the school and inquired about it and instructed the administration to give up the plan. Following the instruction from Block Education officer and the public protest the school cancelled the celebration.

The school principal Manju Subramanya spoke to Kannada Prabha and said the program was planned one year ago. This was a part of a competition to portray the culture of 6 countries.  The controversy was quite unnecessary she felt. The celebration was cancelled only after the Block Education officer instructed, she clarified.

The ABVP has urged the school to celebrate Nation First instead on Friday.
