The Delhi government on Tuesday finally imposed a ban on Chinese manja (metal or glass-coated kite threads) after it killed four people in the capital city since last week.

On Independence Day, 3-year-old Sanchi Goyal was returning home with her parents after watching a film when a kite string slit her throat. She was rushed to a hospital in Rani Bagh but died on her way. Barely 10 kms apart, 4-year-old Harish got his neck wrapped by a string while he had his head stuck out of the sunroof in his car. He also died on his way to a hospital in Janakpuri.

In a similar incident a 22-year-old Zafar Khan lost his life in West Delhi after a string slashed his throat while he was riding his bike on a flyover.

According to a report in NDTV, since last week four people have died and three have been injured in the capital city prompting the Delhi government to impose a ban on the sale, production and storage of Chinese manja in the city.

It released a notification on Tuesday and said that the government will charge a penalty of ₹ 1 lakh and five years of prison to those who will violate the ban. The notification further stated that only the use of cotton thread and natural fibre free of metallic or glass components would be allowed for flying kites

The Delhi High court had earlier asked the Delhi government and civic bodies to issue advisories on the use of these killer strings ahead of Independence Day.
