India vs England 2020-21, 1st T20I: A look at the records scripted as India succumbs to 8-wicket defeat
India and England are fighting it out in a five-match Twenty20 International series in Ahmedabad. Both sides are eyeing the top spot in the ICC T20I Rankings, with England being the top side, while India ais to win the series 4-1 to clinch the very spot.
Team India was yet again off to a losing start, having lost the opening Twenty20 International against England by eight wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday. With this loss, India would be aiming to bounce back in the following games and win the series 4-1 to climb to the top spot in the ICC T20I Rankings, currently held by England. Despite being a low-scoring tie, it produced a couple of records as we take a look.
Indian openers script a low
The Indian opener, Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul were dismissed for cheap, as they were bowled over. Consequently, this was the first instance of the Indian openers being dismissed similarly in a home T20I clash.
Yuzvendra Chahal takes the top spot, for now
Chahal was one of India's wicket-taker in this tie, getting rid of wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler for 28 after trapping him leg-before. As a result, he is now India's highest wicket-taker in the format, going past Jasprit Bumrah's 59.
Match summary
Winning the toss, England invited India to bat first. However, the Indians were shaky, losing wickets at regular intervals, while Shreyas Iyer's 67 helped India post a below-par total of 124/7. In reply, it was opener Jason Roy, whose brilliant 49 was enough to get the job done by eight wickets.
Brief scores: India 124/7 (Iyer 67; Archer 3/23) lost to England 130/2 in 15.3 overs (Roy 49; Sundar 1/18) by eight wickets.
