2 Sri Lankan players, coach test COVID positive ahead of 1st ODI in Dhaka
Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are scheduled to lock horns in a three-match One-Day International series. The series happens to be a part of the Cricket World Cup Super League. However, it seems like the series might have to wait to start following three COVID cases.
Ahead of the opening One-Day International between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on Sunday, the series has been dealt with a setback. A couple of players from the travelling Sri Lankan contingent, along with one of its coaches, have tested positive for COVID-19.
There is uncertainty surrounding it with just hours to go before the first of the three ODIs to kick-off. However, Bangladesh Cricket Board officials have confirmed that they would wait for the second RT-PCR test before taking a call on whether to call off the tie.
According to ESPNCricinfo, one of the players testing positive had already recovered from COVID, therefore triggering a false positive case. As for the others, they have already had their first dose of the COVID vaccine. As of now, all the travelling Lankan players have had at least their first shot of the vaccine.
While Lanka has played four international series since December 2020, it is the first time someone from its contingent has tested positive. In contrast, BCB is concerned regarding the possibility of a bubble breach.
The series happens to be a part of the Cricket World Cup Super League 2020-23. Bangladesh is currently placed sixth in the table, having played six, winning and losing three each. As for Lanka, it is placed at the bottom, having lost all the three matches so far.
