Sri Lanka is touring the Windies, as after a three-match Twenty20 International series, won 2-1 by the host, it has switched focus to a three-game One-Day International series. The opening ODI was held at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Wednesday, which saw the host triumph by eight wickets.

Nonetheless, Windies's win did come on a controversial note, considering how Lankan opener Danushka Gunathilaka was dismissed. While he was batting on 55, Windies skipper Kieron Pollard bowled a short ball during the 21st over, as Gunathilaka defended it and looked for a run.

Nevertheless, he decided to change his mind and stay back. As he looked to get back to his crease, the ball that had landed right around his feet rolled back by hitting his leg in the follow-through. Pollard, who was charging in for an attempt to run out, did not seem convinced and appealed to the umpires.

As the umpires referred it upstairs to the third umpire, the soft signal happened to be out. Upon checking the replays, the third umpire stayed with the on-field umpire's decision as Gunathilaka walked away in disbelief. In the meantime, the replays seemingly suggested that there was no real intention by Gunathilaka to obstruct the field, as he was unaware of the ball being near his feet.

According to the original law for field obstruction as per Marylebone Cricket Club, "The key part of the obstructing the field Law (37.2/37.3) is intent – which can be hard to judge. If the obstruction is wilful, it will be out, but if it's accidental, then it will be not out." Meanwhile, Tom Moody, Lanka's director of cricket, slammed the decision by sending out a tweet that read, "'Wilful obstruction' no way was that wilful... #shocker #WIvSL".

In the meantime, as Lanka was bowled out for 232, Windies chased it down comfortably by eight wickets. Following the game, Windies skipper Pollard was seen having a chat with Gunathilaka, as both maintained peace at the end in an example of the spirit of cricket.
