The total budget size for 2023-24 has been raised by 26 per cent over the previous year to Rs 1,96,462 crore, according to the state finance minister.
Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema presented a Rs 1.96 lakh crore state budget for 2023-24 in the assembly on Friday, March 10, focusing primarily on the education, health, and agriculture sectors. The finance minister proposed an outlay of Rs 17,072 crore for school and higher education, 12 per cent higher than the previous year.
In the Aam Aadmi Party government's first full budget, Cheema unveiled several new initiatives, including a young entrepreneur scheme and two student coaching projects.
The total budget size for 2023-24 has been raised by 26 per cent over the previous year to Rs 1,96,462 crore, according to the state finance minister. It was the AAP government's first complete budget.
He said 117 schools had been designated as 'Schools of Eminence' in the education sector. Upgrading these schools has already begun on a pilot footing at four schools in the Amritsar district.
The Punjab Young Entrepreneur Programme has been launched in the education sphere to encourage Class 11 students to submit original business ideas. The government would help them by giving Rs 2,000 in seed money per student. A budget of Rs 30 crore has been proposed for this reason.
The finance minister suggested a Rs 100 crore budget for installing rooftop solar panel systems in government schools.
In addition, two new schemes, Professional Coaching for Employment and Soft Skill and Communication Training, will provide students with professional coaching by creating dedicated employability coaching centres in government institutions.
After taking office in March 2022, the AAP government first approved a vote-on-account bill on March 22 and then presented its budget for the remainder of the fiscal year in June.
