'Don't wait for cancer signs and symptoms. Get screened'

"Cancer is treatable and curable if you come early. Don't wait for signs and symptoms to come," says Professor Dr Somashekhar SP.

On World Cancer Day, Professor Dr Somashekhar SP, who is the chairman and HOD for Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Center at Manipal Hospitals, Old Airport Road, Bengaluru, shared an awareness message with Asianet Newsable.

Caution, according to Dr Somashekhar S P, is the key word.

"Don't wait for symptoms to show up. Get yourselves screened once a year," he advises.

"Most of the Stage I-II-III cancers are cured. Even some Stage IV patients stay alive for up to 20 years because of new advancements in medical treatment," Dr Somashekhar S P said.

"Not everyone needs to undergo Chemo therapy now. This is the era of personalised medicine -- immunotherapy or targeted therapy has revolutionised cancer treatment," he added.
