Coronavirus outbreak cancels Aadi Amavasai in Tamil Nadu

Rameswaram: The Amavasai (Amavasya) or the No Moon day in the month of Shravan/ Ashadha is very significant. According to the Tamil calendar, Aadi Amavasai is considered as an auspicious day to provide offerings to the departed souls. Thousands gather in Rameswaram for the event, perform pooja and take bath in the bay.

But unfortunately, this time the event has been cancelled in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The police have denied permission for the event as it might spread coronavirus infection in Rameswaram, Thirupullani, Devipattinam and Maariyur.

Due to this, Agnitheertham Bay which would be crowded with nearly a lakh people every year, now wears a deserted look. Police check-post at various entry points are only allowing people after detailed enquiry. 300 policemen have been deployed at 13 check-posts for the purpose.
