Centenarian freedom fighter HS Doreswamy recalls encounter with Mahatma Gandhi

At a time when Mahatma Gandhi's principles are dwindling, freedom fighter and centenarian HS Doreswamy recalled his encounter with the greatest proponent of non-violence, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Doreswamy spoke of how Gandhi inspired him to take up the freedom struggle, and his journey of undergoing torture by police, supplying explosives, destroying   government letters and being imprisoned for 14 months.

In an interview, HS Doreswamy, one of the few surviving freedom fighters and centenarian recalled his meetings with Gandhi Ji and the inspiration behind him joining the freedom struggle.

The freedom fighter said he was surprised to see letters reach Mahatma Gandhi, despite him not being present in a particular address for long.

Doreswamy was jailed for 14 months for destroying government letters by setting post boxes of fire and supplying explosives to freedom fighters in Tumakuru in the 1940s.
