Bengaluru set to lose 3,559 trees in the name of development?

After shelving the controversial steel bridge project that involved axing of 1,800 trees between Basaveshwara Circle to Hebbal in Bengaluru, now the Karnataka government has sent a proposal to the tree expert committee for inspection, as it has identified 3,559 trees in Bengaluru and its surroundings for road widening and metro projects.


In a fresh case of road widening and Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) projects in Bengaluru and surroundings, the tree expert committee has received a proposal from Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). Deputy conservator of forests of the BBMP has sought the inspection as 3,559 trees have been identified which may have to be axed for 'development'.

According to an exclusive document available with Asianet Newsable, a letter dated 26-12-2019 sent by the BBMP’s deputy conservator of forests, has sought the inspection of areas from the tree expert committee.

The letter has the details of road widening project from Anekal, Yelhanka and KR Puram Range under Karnataka rural infrastructure development corporation limited, where 1116 trees have been identified to be axed. 129 trees under BMRCL project between Kadugodi to KR Puram range, 1,822 trees between Nice Road and Magadi Road under Karnataka State Road Highway Project, 377 trees under Kaggalipura Range national highway for road widening project and 115 trees under BMRCL project at UM Kaval in Bengaluru South have also been identified.
