BBMP, BMRCL axe 30 trees for underground metro despite police complaint

The BBMP and BMRCL that were held responsible for killing many trees in the past in the name of development, went ahead with its plan to axe 30 trees in Dairy Circle to make way for the Namma Metro underground line. Now, a lawyer has threatened to drag these two agencies to court.

Bengaluru: Despite objections and a police complaint against the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Bengaluru Metropolitan Rail Corporation Limited’s (BMRCL) plan to cut 165 trees between Bannerghatta Road and Shoolay Circle, about 30 trees were axed on Sunday (June 7). According to complainant advocate S Umesh, the civic agency had done this “killing act” on holiday despite an assurance from a BBMP forest officer. Umesh said there were many trees that were 10 to 15 years old and could have been translocated but the palike just killed them. Now he says he will take the matter to Karnataka high court.
