Bengaluru: BBMP official sleeps over illegal sale of camel meat

In the backdrop of Ramzan and Bakrid, the festival of sacrifice, it was suspected that camel meat was being smuggled and sold illegally. Ironically, the joint director of BBMP animal husbandry department, the licencing authority for all the meat, fish and poultry stalls, when questioned about the illegal trade, said, ‘he didn’t get a dream of the illegality’

Bengaluru: Following reports of camel meat being sold openly at Broadway Road in Shivajinagar, MyNation rushed to the BBMP’s Animal Husbandry Department. When questioned about the open selling of the meat, the concerned officer said that he did not get any such dream of camel meat being sold.

Anand, Joint Director of BBMP Animal Husbandry Department, who is said to have come to BBMP on deputation with influence from Congress leader TB Jayachandra three years ago, is the man in question. He said, "I did not get any dream of camel meat being sold. In the  first place, no such incident has taken place and without my knowledge camel cannot be brought in."

Though he tried to show some stiff resistance, the relentless confrontations with him and the camera recordings were enough to put the Joint Director under the scanner. He later demanded a written complaint regarding the issue and said he would take action and also get the report from his subordinates.

However, Animal rights activist Sunil Dugar said, “Nothing has been happening over the years despite raising concerns with police or BBMP officials. There is a Karnataka high court direction, which says there should be no camel movement or its meat be sold. Yet, it is done openly. It looks like officials are hand-in-glove with smugglers."
