Robert Payas, one of the 26 accused in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has served more than the term required. Now, having lost the hope to get released from the prison, Payas pleads the government for mercy killing.

Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said “the Central Government cannot make a personal decision on the release of Rajiv Gandhi Gandhi murder convict”.

Speaking further to reporters she said, “AIIMS would definitely be set up in Tamil Nadu, but I cannot disclose the information of where the AIIMS would be set up in TN. The details of the same would soon be reported in the court by the TN government. "

When one group is protesting to bring AIIMS in Sengipatti, the other group demands it to be set up in Madurai. The process of setting up AIIMS in TN is getting delayed due to these demands from different groups. The TN government would soon discuss the possibilities with the AIIMS Technical team of this project.

When asked about the central government’s decision on this, she said, Sitharaman said,” In one such situation, his mercy killing petition has already been rejected by the president. This case has to be discussed with the Law experts, Human Rights commission and the State government. Central government cannot make a personal decision on this.” she further added.
