Std 8 student convinces Home Minister to stay teachers' transfer

Higher Primary School Student Stops Teachers’ Transfer

The education department had identified some teachers of a government model higher primary school in Puttur, Dakshina Kannada District in Karnataka for transfer, stating that there was excess staff in the said school.

This upset Divit Rai, a standard student studying in Haraadi Government Model Higher Primary School situated in Puttur, who also happens to be the Home Minister in his Schools’ Student Cabinet. He sent SMS to the Karnataka Home Minister requesting him to stay the transfer of his teachers, and the minister had assured him to do so.

In wake of the scanty teacher strength in government schools, the Karnataka Education Department had initiated a transfer of teachers in some pockets of Karnataka through counselling.

Four teachers from the Haraadi Government Model Higher Primary School situated in Puttur, Dakshina Kannada district were slated to get transfer orders, as they were  identified as excess staff in the said school and were said to have attended the counseling session held on July 19.

Having learnt that his teachers are likely to get transferred elsewhere, Divit Rai, contacted the State Home Minister, Dr. Parameshwar by sending SMS from his mother Prathima’s cell phone that said

“I, Haaraadi School Cabinet Home Minister would like to talk to you for 5 minutes”

This piqued the interest of the  Karnataka Home Minister who eventually replied to Divit message after some time.

"There are about 432 students in the school. The institution has a very good name in the surrounding areas and has shown good results. At present, the school has 15 teachers and 13 sections. The education department’s decision of going ahead with the transfer of four teachers would pose a problem for students in the school," Divit apprised the Home Minister.

The Minister promptly called and assured Divit's that ‘action would be taken to ensure the teachers would remain in the same school.

Later, Dinesh Aminmattu, the Chief Minister's media advisor called Divit’s mother’s phone and assured her that the Education Minister had taken suitable action and status-quo would be maintained, without transferring the teachers.
