Karnataka: Are all suicide threats by policemen genuine?

Growing suicide threatening from Cops

Policemen committing suicide hasn't been new to Karnataka but the rising trend was noticed when DySP MK Ganapathy's suicide that caught everyone's attention.

After Ganapathy's suicide issue, many instances of uniformed men threatening to end their lives came to light.

Vijaynagar police inspector Sanjeev Gowda was suspended for not taking action against the growing gang violence in his police station limits. According to sources, Gowda approached police commissioner NS Megharikh with a request to cancel the suspension order. He allegedly said, "My wife is under depression because of my suspension and said she would commit suicide if it wasn't cancelled."

Another instance is that of a police constable in Rajagopalanagar police station who met the director general of police (DGP) Om Prakash with a request for transfer to Davanagere. However, the DGP didn't pay much attention to the constable's plea. The policeman threatened to commit suicide and was successful in getting the transfer order he desired.

Yet another constable who was deployed at Jayanagar police station was transferred to another station temporarily. However, the policeman refused to take up the new job and sent a message to a senior officer on July 7 claiming to commit suicide. With immediate intervention, the senior officer approached the cop's family and counselled him. Also, his transfer was cancelled.

In the wake of policemen taking drastic steps to end their lives, the commissioner has arranged counselling sessions to all constables assuring them that their problems will be tackled.
