In a show of opposition unity, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister  M K Stalin and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah attended the swearing-in ceremony of Siddaramaiah as the Karnataka Chief Minister on Saturday.
 

Rahul Gandhi guaranteed on Saturday that the first Cabinet meeting will result in the implementation of the five 'guarantees' the party made prior to the Karnataka elections. "The first cabinet meeting of the new government will take place in one to two hours. In that meeting, all the five 'guarantees' will become a law," Gandhi said.

A week after Congress’ landslide victory in Karnataka assembly polls, Siddaramaiah took oath as Karnataka Chief Minister, and DK Shivakumar took oath as Deputy CM on Saturday. 

Siddaramaiah took oath as the new Karnataka chief minister today with state Congress Chief DK Shivakumar as his deputy. The oath-taking ceremony held at Kanteerava stadium in Bengaluru.

During campaigning for the May 10 Karnataka Assembly elections, Congress leaders repeatedly assured the voters that these five guarantees would be approved in the maiden cabinet meeting on the first day of coming to power.

The presence of the TMC chief at the swearing-in programme of Siddaramaiah is considered crucial for opposition unity, especially after her recent statement that in 2024 Lok Sabha elections, her party will support the Congress where it is strong.

Karnataka government formation: On Thursday, Congress officially announced the name of the chief ministerial and deputy chief ministerial face, thus ending days of suspense. Congress leaders Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar were chosen to be chief minister and deputy chief minister respectively.

With DK Shivakumar as KPCC president, Congress scored a resounding victory in the May 10 Karnataka elections with 135 seats in the 224-member Assembly.

Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar, who were camping in the national capital for days after winning the Karnataka Assembly polls, left for Bengaluru this afternoon. A Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting will be held in Bengaluru today at 7 pm.

The ceremony is set to be held in Bengaluru on Sunday at 12.30 PM. Along with CM, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar is also scheduled to take oath. Earlier, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal said that the national party has decided to invite leaders from like-minded parties to attend the ceremony.

Announcing the decision taken by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge after hectic parleys ever since the party emerged victorious on May 13, KC Venugopal said all leaders, including the top leadership, worked very hard to make Karnataka victory a reality.

On Thursday morning, the Congress named veteran Congress leader Siddaramaiah as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, ending days of deadlock since it won the assembly election with 135 seats. The decision was made shortly after midnight.

DK Shivakumar has been named as Karnataka Deputy CM by Congress High Command. Speaking about the development, he said, "The party high command has taken a decision." He further said he is ready to sacrifice the position for the party.
