The arrest release and re arrest drama of 36 cows

The consequences of Go Rakshak brigade is more far reaching than anybody’s imagination. A simple act of purchasing 36 cows at Tamil Nadu by Belagavi farmers and taking them home has caused complications beyond comprehension.

Three weeks ago, farmers from Belagavi were transporting 36 cows that they had purchased in Tamil Nadu. Of them 27 were pregnant.

Near Kyathasandra a group of Go Rakshak brigade stopped them and alleged that they were being taken to slaughter house. A lot of ruckus was created by them. Finally after being convinced by the receipts shown by the farmers proving their purchase the organisers stopped their protest and went away.

However, the police did not let them go. They alleged public nuisance and arrested and sent all 36 cows to Dhyan Foundation at Gubbi.

The angry farmers appealed to the court to intervene. That took 3 weeks but finally the court ordered that the farmers should pay fine of Rs 50 per cow and take them home.

Meanwhile the 27 pregnant cows had given birth to calves and the Foundation had taken care of the cows and calves. Hence it demanded that the farmers must pay a compensation of Rs 1.70 lakhs and only then can take the cows.  The farmers could not pay such huge sum and sat in dharna in front of the Foundation on foot path. They appealed to the district in charge Minister Jayachandra but he did not care to respond.

Realising that the protest was gradually snowballing into law and order situation the district administration intervened and in the presence of the Revenue Officials and the police got the cows released.

The happy farmers immediately arranged lorries to transport the cows and left Gubbi. When they were nearing Chitradurga, at Bharamasagara, police stopped them and seized the cows, following a stay order obtained by the Dhyan Foundation in High Court.  It is reported that the cows were stopped and sent back to Dhyan Foundation, Gubbi, along with police escort, Chitradurga SP Aruna Rangarajan, told Kannada Prabha.
