Reiterating that the Panipat-born athlete had made the country proud, Prime Minister Modi said that Neeraj had inspired India's youth to take up sports.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra who made India proud with his gold-medal winning effort at the finals of the event at the Tokyo Olympics.

Congratulating Neeraj Chopra, Prime Minister Modi recalled how during his interaction with the former ahead of his departure for Tokyo, the Javelin thrower showed confidence on his face and he had no pressure upon him.

Reiterating that the Panipat-born athlete had made the country proud, Prime Minister Modi said that Neeraj had inspired India's youth to take up sports.

In Tokyo, our athletes have done well in sporting events we are not generally associated with the country, the Prime Minister said.

"This was the most important day of my sports career, and today I gave my 100 per cent and won a medal for my country."

"I wanted to do well. This was the last event for India. A lot of people supported me and motivated me. And that has helped me succeed," Neeraj said.

Earlier, moments after Neeraj scripted Olympic history for India, the Prime Minister had appreciated the athlete's tenacity and noted that he personified the best of sporting talent and sportsman spirit.

The Prime Minister underscored that what Neeraj had accomplished would be remembered forever.
