Chief minister HD Kumaraswamy's actor turned politician son Nikhil Kumaraswamy sought to clarify that he did not choose an easy route like Rajya Sabha to enter politics. Rather, he wanted to fight and be elected to prove a point. The chief minister’s son said that it was the demand of party workers that he must contest from Mandya and added that he has never regretted his decisions.

His opponent Sumalatha has garnered the support of film stars, producers, members of the BJP and the Congress despite being an independent candidate. Nikhil, however, seemed unfazed and said that it is up to them, claiming that he needs no backing of Sandalwood stars as he has the backing of his father who he considers a big star and a crowd-puller. He also spoke about the uphill challenges that lies ahead of him in the Lok Sabha election in an exclusive interview.
