Bengaluru motorists not in control: 2.3 lakh booked for use phones on the road in 2019


Despite heavy penalties, warning from traffic departments, 2,36,867 motorists were caught for using their phones while driving in 2019. The traffic commissioner has appealed to motorists, young and old, to avoid this habit as it can lead to injuries, disabilities and deaths.

 Bengaluru Traffic Police which can boast about the reduction in drinking and driving cases has another big task – to deal with the use of mobile phones while riding or driving.

In 2019, 2,36,867 motorists were booked for using mobile phones while riding or driving. The traffic department says, like the way it cracked down on drinking and driving menace, they will start campaigning soon and ensure special drives are held in connection with this particular offence.

At present, the department can impose a penalty of Rs 1,000 to motorists if caught for the first time. For the second time, the department will impose a fine of Rs 2000.
