People in Karnataka fall for rumours, queue up at looted liquor store

Hundreds of people lined up at wine stores in Chikkamagaluru after rumours of liquor shops being allowed to function during lockdown spread. Police resorted to lathi charge to chase away the ones craving for alcohol.

Rumours of wine shops being open got hundreds of alcoholics to queue up at a wine shop, which attracted hundreds more of their drinking buddies.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at Yelamblasa village of Kadur Taluk in Chikkamagaluru.

According to reports, the police had arrived to check on a liquor store which was looted last night.

The doors were broken, and liquor bottles were missing.

Seeing that the doors were open, people thought that liquor stores were open as an exception during the lockdown. The villagers soon started queuing up.

Police, who requested the alcoholics to disperse were not able to make the gathering understand that they were mistaken. In order to chase the crowd, police had to resort to lathi charge.
