No more free food at Indira canteen during lockdown: Karnataka govt scraps initiative

Amidst the lockdown, the Karnataka government which had announced free food for poor and marginalised community during the lockdown period due to coronavirus, has now changed its decision and asked people to purchase food instead.

Over a week after serving free food at Indira Canteen, the Karnataka government has now reversed its decision and asked public to pay and eat.

Deputy CM CN Ashwath Narayan told media persons, "This is not new. It’s the old system, like how people use to pay and eat. This decision has been taken because the government has ensured to help marginalised communities get benefits like essentials at their doorstep, and whoever has not received them can claim it."

He said all those who have registered with the labour department will be covered and will be supplied monthly ration.
