Few youths took to the streets in Davanagere, preventing Muslim women from shopping for EID as community elders have warned about the spread of coronavirus and the image of the community being tarnished by the actions of a few.

A video that captured their acts has gone viral. Following this, Chikkamagaluru- Kadur MP Shobha Karandlaje tweeted about the events that transpired.

As the matter escalated, the district police swung into action and arrested five persons in connection with this.

Community members and political leaders say, the BJP, RSS and Shobha Karandlaje are using the opportunity to patronise Muslim women and demonise men.

JD(S) leader and national spokesperson for the party, Tanveer Ahmed, says her (Shobha Karandlaje’s) views on the incident are “condemnable” and that she has made the incident into a “political and communal” one.

BJP leader Malavika Avinash defended Karandlje and said police is right in taking action
