Twenty-five people died in house collapses triggered by landslides as incessant overnight rains pounded Mumbai and nearby areas, with the city witnessing severe waterlogging, and disruption of local train services and vehicular traffic.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray has expressed grief over the deaths in accidents at Chembur and Vikhroli due to torrential rains and announced that the government would pay Rs 5 lakh each to the heirs of the deceased & free treatment would be given to the injured, said a statement from CMO. 

A red alert has been sounded in the city and people have been advised not to venture out in the open.

A ground-plus-one residential building collapsed in Vikhroli area in the morning hours of Sunday, killing three people, as per BMC, the city's municipal body.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said four to five houses have been affected by the landslide and at least six to eight people are feared to be trapped in the rubble.

At Vashi Naka area in Chembur, twelve people died after the retaining wall of a house collapsed after a tree fell on it at 1 a.m. According to preliminary information from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), two more people are being treated at Rajawadi hospital.

In the second incident, three people died at Surya Nagar in Vikhroli after 4-5 hutments collapsed due to a landslip at 2.40 am. Two more were injured and have been admitted to a nearby hospital.

Meanwhile, incessant overnight rains threw parts of Mumbai out of gear on Sunday with the city witnessing severe waterlogging, disruption of local train services and vehicular traffic.

Five automatic weather stations across the city- Kandivali Fire station, Kandivali workshop, H east ward office, Vile Parle fire station, S ward office- have recorded over 100 mm rain in an hour between 1 and 2 am. The downpour has caused heavy flooding in low-lying areas of Chunabhatti, Sion, Dadar, and Gandhi Market, Chembur and Kurla LBS Road.
