New mAadhaar app launched: What is it and how it works
- With mAadhaar, you no longer have to carry the physical card around.
- It simply transforms your smartphone into an Aadhaar card.
- An OTP will be sent to the registered mobile number.
This app could mean you can sync Aadhaar data and no longer have to carry the physical card around. However, it is only available Android right now, which will simply transform your smartphone into an Aadhaar card.
Why should you use it?
The newly launched app, mAadhaar, lets you carry an electronic version of your Aadhaar card. The app by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is now available to download on the Google Play Store.
The aim of developing this app was to ensure you don't have to carry a physical copy of the card, considering the unique identity card is slowly becoming an important document when it comes to banking, tax, etc.
How it works?
You need to head to the Google Play store and download the mAadhaar app. Once you download the app, it will allow you to import all your data, but not before setting a password. You will have the option to either manually enter your Aadhaar number or simply scan the QR code.
As soon as you do so, an OTP will be sent to the registered mobile number. This is the mobile number your Aadaar is linked to, and so ensure you have the same mobile number otherwise verification will fail. Once it is verified, you can start using the app as an electronic version of your Aadhaar card.

You will be able to share your eKYC information with services, and also lock your biometric data to safeguard it from threats. However, there is an option to unlock it whenever you need it for a service. The password that you setup will be crucial at all stages, and ensure it is not an easy one. However, one must also ensure that they don't forget the password.
UIDAI calls it a convenient way to carry Aadhaar number with demographic details anytime, anywhere. However, it is still unclear how safe your data is. It is important that you look up for the right app and don't feed your data into a fake or malicious app.
