NEET tragedy: Anitha's family refuses TN CM Palaniswami's compensation as police continue to detain protesters

Anithas family refuses TN CM Palaniswamis compensation

Protests continued over the death of medical aspirant S Anitha in several districts of Tamil Nadu. The 17-year-old who had scored 1,176 marks out of 1,200 in the plus two exams under the Tamil Nadu state board committed suicide after failing to secure admission through NEET.

Anitha had scored top marks in the plus two exams under the Tamil Nadu state board. However, she was unable to score high marks in the NEET to secure a medical seat. Her NEET score was a paltry 86 out of 720 marks.

Hailing from a small village called Kuzhumur in Ariy­alur, Anitha was unable to comprehend NEET and was unable to spend money on extra coaching class as NEET is based on CBSE syllabus.

She was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her house in Ariyalur district on Friday morning, September 1.

Protests erupted in several districts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai, Coimbatore and Salem. Around 1500 policemen have been deployed across Tamil Nadu to stop the protests from spiralling out of control.

The members of DMK, CPI (M), VCK, Tamil Nadu Maanavar Iyakkam, Tamil Nadu Ilaignar Iyakkam, May 17 Movement and the Puratchi Bharatham Party. The demonstration was held at nine places, including Velachery, Mylapore, Choolaimedu, Kilpauk, T Nagar and Korukkupet, reported the New Indian Express.

Anitha’s family also reportedly refused to accept the Rs 7 lakh compensation promised to them by Chief Minister E Palaniswami.

District Collector G Lakshmipriya visited Anitha’s family for the third consecutive day to convey her condolences. She tried to hand over the cheque from the government announced by Chief Minister E Palaniswami. The chief minister also offered a government job to a member of Anitha’s family.

However, they have reportedly refused to accept the amount and vowed not to take any benefit from the government until the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET is scrapped in total, reported the New Indian Express.
