Ultra-modern KSRTC buses slated to hit village roads

Ultra-modern KSRTC buses slated to hit village roads

Currently, not so well-maintained KSRTC buses ply on village roads and often ‘stand’ in front of the dilapidated bus stops, giving people second thoughts about travelling.

This will soon be a thing of the past, as KSRTC had undergone a major change.

Making using of modern technology, the new KSRTC fleet is said to have undergone a sea change by incorporating ultra modern features like a panic button, which can be pressed by female passengers during an emergency, that would send alerts to a central control room. It also has features like ramps, which would make entry and exit easier for the specially challenged.

Stopper buttons have also been installed in the buses, so commuters can press the button and alight from the vehicle, without having to request the conductor. Digital displays and announcements of next stop in advance have also been added.

Going ahead, KSTRC plans to launch buses with automatic, fire extinguishers and roof ventilators. Buses will also have with CCTV and a GPS navigation system which would also reduce thefts and help ascertain what went wrong inside the bus by the authorities, in case of any eventualities, say officers.

The bus, named ‘Midi’, is said to cost ₹27.50 lakh and is a joint venture of Nurm and directorate of Urban Land Transport. 737 buses are likely to be operational from next month across the state.

Size-wise, the 'Midi' is smaller than the average KSRTC bus but is larger than a minibus. It comes in two variants - a 30-seater one and a 40-seater one - and are claimed to have good manoeuvrability and are supposed to be suitable for roads in villages, which are usually narrow and congested.

Service of this 'Midi' bus is likely to start next month from Kengeri KSRTC depot.
