Step in the right direction: Chitrakala Parishath fined for littering

  • In India, every event is followed by piles of garbage.
  • It was the same situation after the 'Chitra Sante' in Bengaluru.
  • In a good precedent, the BBMP has fined the organisers for littering.

Rules aside, organisers generally dump the responsibility of the clean up on the local municipal. But things are slowly changing.

The Bengaluru Chitrakala Parishath (CKP) had organized 'Chitra Sante 2017' on Sunday January 15. Chitra Sante is one of the biggest art events in India, which saw 1,400 artists from 16 States with nearly 80,000 paintings displayed at the Kumara Krupa Road and the CKP premises.

The Sante was extended to Crescent Road and Gandhi Bhavan Road also. Thousands of art lovers had gathered to see and purchase paintings in the exhibition.

As the organizers of the Sante had not taken any initiative to manage garbage, the next day saw the usual piles of garbage and wastage throughout the streets.

But in what is perhaps a good precedent, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has levied a Rs 5 lakh fine on the Chitrakala Parishath for arranging the event and causing pollution on Kumara Krupa Road.

The BBMP has served a notice to the administrative officers of the CKP and asked them to pay the fine within seven days. CKP is supposed to pay the penalty through a DD, in favour of the BBMP Commissioner, failing which 'necessary action' will be taken against the CKP under the KMC Act.

Sarfaraz Khan, Joint Commissioner of BBMP (Solid waste) has said that 5-6 tonnes of solid waste have been cleared from the Chitra Sante premises. The solid waste includes plastic plates and cups and wrapper papers.
