Kerala Schools have one lakh invisible students

When the state government made Unique Identification Number (UID) mandatory for schools in Kerala, something mysterious happened.

Nearly one lakh students 'disappeared'  from the total number projected by schools across the state when the final tabulation of UID registration was completed, exposing the fraudulent practices adopted by private aided school managements to deceive the government.

As per the usual practice, the Education Department collects the total number of students from schools on the sixth day of the academic year. In 2015-16, the total number of students present in schools on the sixth day of the year was 31.5 lakh. But when the mandatory UID registration was finalised, the number of students dropped to 30.5 lakhs! All schools come under the UIN registration and final figures clearly showed that the schools manipulated numbers to get approval to appoint more teachers and to create more posts.

Even though aided schools are run by private managements, the salary for the staff and teachers is paid by the government. It is an open secret that the aided school managements appoint teachers by taking huge bribes, ranging from Rs.15 lakhs to Rs.45 lakhs per post depending on the demand and supply of teachers in the market. Whenever the governments tried to put an end to this blatant corruption and to appoint teachers in aided schools through Kerala Public Service Commission, the private management lobby put up a stiff resistance and foiled it.

The UID scheme was made mandatory in Kerala schools in 2011 and it was used for providing various scholarships and for appearing for examinations including the SSLC.
