Karnataka to have 24-hour power supply in two years

Karnataka, 24-hour power supply, gas plant, Yelahanka, Pavagad solar plant

A 370 MW gas plant at Singanayakanahalli in Yelahanka, whose foundation stone was laid by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently, promises 24-hour power supply to residents of the state on completion.

The 1571-crore project is expected to be completed within two years.

Speaking on the occasion, CM Siddaramaiah said the state will have nine power generating plants in two years.

The state government aims at providing clean drinking water as well as supplying power without interruption. The project also aims at supplying quality power. The solar power generating project coming up at Pavagad in Tumakuru will be the largest in the world, he said.

Karnataka Energy Minister DK Shivakumar said that, henceforth, farmers will have uninterrupted power supply as soon as the ‘Niranthara Jyothi’ (continuous supply of power) programme is implemented.

The solar park planned to be installed at Pavagad is expected to the world's largest. The park will be spread across 12,000 acres and is expected to generate 2,000 MW of power. The land has been acquired from farmers at a rent of Rs. 21,000 per acre for a year.

The new environment-friendly project will replace the earlier diesel-based plant at the site that was shut down to protect the environment.
