Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who is also handling the Home portfolio, issued a strong warning against police atrocities and termed the police brutality on a man at Kollam on Friday as 'a shame' for the entire force and the government. The Chief Minister was referring to the shocking instance of police brutality in which a police man hit a youth with a wireless set for not wearing helmet while riding a motor cycle. Santosh, a resident of Kollam, was riding a motorbike with a toddler when traffic police, who were conducting routine inspection, stopped him. But Santosh hit the break a few yards away, an act that infuriated the policemen. One of the policemen allegedly hit the youth with a wireless set.
Things turned worse when Santosh and local people blocked the road and staged a sit in there demanding justice. Under pressure, the City Police Commissioner suspended the police man who was involved in the incident.
Calling the treatment of the youth by the police as amateurish, Vijayan said such incidents would tarnish the image of government. Instead of third-degree, the police must resort to scientific ways to solve crimes.
