Fans putting up large illegal flex banners wishing their favourite movie stars or politicians are a common 'sore' sight in Bengaluru.

But things just might change soon as now the Bangalore Metropolitan Task Force (BMTF) can book cases against people defacing the city, Bangalore Mirror reported on Wednesday.

The report said that from Wednesday onwards, the BMTF will start a clean up drive against these illegal messages and greetings. The task force will comprise 20 personnel from the Karnataka State Reserve Police and will be backed by the local police of the area.

The unit will target any illegal defacement of public spaces by any individual or organisation. Henceforth putting up of hoardings and posters, including those for PG vacancies or films - without the permission of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) - will be considered illegal.

The report emphasised that the ambit of the rule includes even putting a nail into a tree.

Case will be booked under the Karnataka Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act, 1981 and the guilty face up to three years of imprisonment under section 436A of the Karnataka Municipal Act.

The BBMP, meanwhile, has been asked to designate 10 places in the city, where such hoardings, banners and posters can be displayed.
