Conditions are becoming favorable for the withdrawal of northeast monsoon rains around January 15 in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe, Kerala, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, and south interior of Karnataka.

Karnataka anticipates a shift in weather as the Meteorological Department forecasts intensified monsoon from Nov 23-26. Expecting rainfall in southern and coastal areas, with alerts for Kodagu and Chikmagalur. Recent dry weather led to soaring temperatures above norms in multiple districts. Residents advised to brace for changing weather conditions.

An easterly wave trough is expected to bring intense rainfall to several districts, and the weather system may lead to sporadic rain with intervals of sunshine. Coastal areas may experience intermittent rainfall.

In response to the severe drought conditions affecting 195 taluks during the first phase and an additional 21 taluks due to a lack of monsoon rains, the Karnataka Cabinet has made a collective decision to seek financial assistance of Rs 5,326 crores from the central government to address the resulting losses and for remedial measures.
 

The recent torrents triggered catastrophic landslides, causing road blockages and the collapse of numerous structures across the region. The disaster tragically led to a reported death toll surpassing 60 individuals.

Kerala only received 25.1 mm of rain from August 1 to August 15, as opposed to the anticipated 254.6 mm. In other words, there has been a 90% shortfall. Rainfall during the monsoon season usually rises during the first week of August.

Karnataka's monsoon took an unexpected turn as rainfall receded, causing drought concerns. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah seeks to declare drought, but strict central government rules obstruct it. The key issue lies in criteria, including 60% rainfall deficit, non-sown crop certificates, and compensation limits. Siddaramaiah appeals for a reduction in rain deficit percentage from 60% to 30%.
