Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday (July 7 ) presented the state budget and announced new decisions in the education sector. In his speech, Siddaramaiah announced that new toilet complexes will be constructed in as many as 5,775 schools and 150 colleges in proportion to students' strength. The project will be taken up in convergence with MGNREGS at a cost of Rs 200 crore.

He also announced that Rs 100 crore will be allocated for 3,833 old, dilapidated and rain-damaged school buildings and 724 pre-university college rooms.

"A grant of Rs 20,000 to Rs 45,000 is provided to each government primary and high school in the state for maintenance and upkeep of the buildings. In the current year a total grant of Rs 153 crore will be provided for maintenance of around 47,272 schools and 1231 PU colleges," Siddaramaiah said.

In terms of health and nutrition, Siddaramaiah said that egg/peanut, chikki/banana will be provided twice a week and will be extended to students studying in classes 9 and 10, covering a total of 60 lakh students. Rs 280 crore will be set aside for this. 

"To address learning deficiencies in children, Kalika Balavardhane programme will be launched at a cost of Rs 80 crore. A new programme Marusinchana will be introduced for students to prepare for secondary level examinations through special training," Siddaramaiah said.

"Rs 2 crore will be allocated for setting up innovation labs in higher primary and pre-university colleges," he further said.

On Friday, CM Siddaramaiah presented the state budget and criticised the central govenrment for reducing share in schemes and shortage of funds for state government schemes. In his speech during the budget presentation, Siddaramaiah said, "Central government is reducing its share in centrally sponsored schemes. Due to this, there is a severe shortage of funds for new state government schemes."

"The previous government increased loans to energy-supplying companies from Rs 51,087 crore to Rs 91,911 crore. In 2022-23, the central government released only Rs 447 crore for social security pension schemes, while state contributed Rs 8,636 crore. This is a ratio of 4.9 to 95.1," the chief minister said.
