During this year's Deepavali, the Tami Nadu government has allowed using less-polluting firecrackers for two hours. Fireworks will be permitted for two hours on October 24, between 6 and 7 am and 7 and 8 pm, as in previous years, according to the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB). To ensure an environmentally friendly Deepavali, the TNPCB has also urged citizens to celebrate the festival without causing environmental degradation or air pollution.

"According to the Supreme Court's decision, the State government of Tamil Nadu has been following the restriction for the last few years that crackers be burned only for two hours, from 6 am to 7 am and from 7 pm to 8 pm. This restriction on burning crackers for only two hours a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, will be enforced again this year (2022)," in a notification, the TNPCB stated.

According to the state PCB, those planning a community fire cracking in a public place must obtain prior permission from the district administration or local bodies through local welfare associations and others.

The pollution control agency also issued guidelines for the public to follow during the fiesta. Other recommendations from the pollution control body include bursting crackers that emit low smoke and cause less noise, avoiding bursting 'lars' (walas) that may cause noise and smoke for a longer period, keeping crackers away from hospitals and worship places, not bursting crackers near hutment areas and other locations prone to catching fire, and bursting eco-friendly crackers as mandated by the government.

The Greater Chennai Corporation has also urged the public to observe the government's Deepavali regulations. A senior civic official added that the authorities would conduct regular inspections to catch the violators.
