Kolkata Police imposed Section 163 of the BNS and increased security after violent clashes between BJP and TMC workers outside the Election Commission office over allegations of voter list manipulation using bulk Form 6 applications.
Authorities imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) to prevent further clashes between BJP and TMC workers outside the Election Commission office in Kolkata, a police officer said.

Police Action and Security Measures
DC (Central Division) Shrikant Jagannathrao told ANI that the situation is under control, and increased deployment of CAPF and local police is underway. This follows allegations of mass submissions of Form 6 by BJP workers, which TMC claims is an attempt to manipulate voter lists. "Following yesterday's incident, we have invoked Section 163 under the BNS here. We have significantly increased our deployment compared to before. The deployment of CAPF has also been increased. We have made extensive preparations to ensure that no untoward incident occurs here. We have all the necessary resources in place. Whatever the situation may be, we are fully prepared to handle it,' DC Jagannathrao said.
TMC Protest Over Alleged Voter List Manipulation
Earlier, the TMC supporters launched an indefinite protest near the Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office in Kolkata, alleging large-scale irregularities in the submission of Form 6 applications and demanding strict action against those involved. The protest, which entered its second day, comes amid heightened political tensions following violent clashes between TMC and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers in the area.
The controversy stems from an incident that occurred on Tuesday when BLOs claimed they intercepted a BJP worker attempting to enter the CEO's office with over 400 Form 6 applications. Form 6 is used for inclusion of names in the electoral rolls, and the large number of applications raised suspicions among TMC supporters. Following the claim, TMC workers gathered outside the office in protest on Tuesday while BJP supporters also reached the spot, leading to a heated exchange that soon spiralled into violence.
Mamata Banerjee Launches Scathing Attack on BJP
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the BJP ahead of the 2026 assembly elections, accusing the party of land grabs, deleting voter names, and indulging in divisive politics, and vowed to ensure it never regains strength in the state.
Speaking to reporters, CM Mamata Banerjee said, "An attempt was made to grab the land of Amartya Sen. An attempt was made to evict him. They should be ashamed of themselves." She further added, "BJP is doing what the CPI(M) used to do. Names have been deleted by looking at the names. I approached the Supreme Court." (ANI)
