Ramesh Jigajinagi, the MP from Karnataka who is currently serving his fifth term, is also the only BJP MP from the 28 reserved constituencies in south India is all set to be sworn in as union minister on Tuesday.

Amit Shah informed the MP of his inclusion into the ministry when they met on Monday. Jigajinagi is from the Schedule Caste (Left) community and the BJP state unit had recommended Jigajinagi’s name as it would help the party garner Dalit votes in the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections.
Known for his clean image and benevolence, he is one of the most popular leaders in northern Karnataka, even after switching alliances and parties.It was in 1983 that the veteran politician was first elected to the assembly. During the 12th Lok Sabha election in 1998 he defeated B Shankaranand of the Congress.
64-year-old Jigajinagi has served as a member in several Parliamentary Standing Committees, including home affairs, commerce, food and consumer affairs, human resources, defence, and external affairs.
This will mark the second time a minister from Vijayapura has been inducted into the central government. During Atal Bihari Vajpeyee-led government, Basana Gowda Patil Yatnal, the then MP of Vijayapura, served as the Minister of State, Railways. He has also served in the textile and cooperative ministries.
